How to book Surge Capacity Clinic Appointments

Surge Capacity Clinic

Assisting general practices with face to face appointments within 24 hours

Non-urgent advice: What is the Surge Capacity Clinic?

The Surge Capacity Clinic is based at The Burns Practice, Albion Place, Doncaster DN1 2EG. It provides additional face-to-face appointment capacity for patients registered within Doncaster practices, between 10am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, with effect from 8th November 2021. Access to the clinic is via the patient’s registered practice, and only patients that have already been clinically triaged by their registered practice, and judged to require a face-to-face appointment within 24-48hrs, are eligible to be booked in.

The appointments are for patients with onset of new, undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems, not for patients with ongoing complex or chronic conditions. The referring clinician will book the appointment directly for the patient, on either EMIS or TPP (see guides below), and advise the patient where to attend. Appointments are allocated on a PCN basis, and calculated on fair shares. Each day’s appointments will be published at 8am the day before, or 8am on Friday for Monday appointments. Appointments will only be released if a surge clinician has been definitively booked for the session. Any impact of on-the-day cancellation by surge clinicians will be managed by the PCD team, with every effort being made to avoid re-directing patients back to the referring practice.
