Highlights from International Men’s Day

On Wednesday, 19th November, we marked International Men’s Day with a dedicated patient engagement event alongside our drop‑in GP Clinics on the Health Van. Our team spent the morning at Clock Corner before heading to Lakeside Village for the afternoon session, meeting members of the community and offering support, advice and resources focused on men’s physical and mental wellbeing.

Throughout the day, we handed out 35 information packs and spoke to a large number of men, with around 70% of conversations taking place with those aged 60 or older. Prostate cancer was by far the most common topic raised, with many people sharing their concerns around symptoms, diagnosis and family history. Several men shared that they didn’t know what symptoms to look out for, making the advice we provided on the day especially valuable.

We were joined on the day by Macmillan, who held conversations with members of the public, answering questions and providing advice and guidance. We also provided several resources to mental health organisations and support available to men in Doncaster, such as Andy’s Man Club. Our clinicians also directed attendees to Randox for Health Checks where appropriate.

Several men opened up about close family members who had been diagnosed with cancer, and how this has made them more aware, and in some cases, more anxious, about their own health. Being able to talk through these worries and receive clear, practical information made a significant difference.

One attendee shared:

“I asked my GP about a prostate check, but I didn’t know what the symptoms even were. The information you provide during the event is really useful – I can finally check.”

The day was a reminder of just how important it is to create safe, approachable spaces where men feel comfortable asking questions, expressing concerns and accessing support without judgment. Opening these conversations can lead to earlier detection, better outcomes and a stronger focus on wellbeing across our communities.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us on the day and to all involved in the organisation of the event!
